What is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing?
The rhythmic and rapid eye movements have been found to lessen negative emotions and the impact of trauma. I will give you guided instructions to access important trauma memories, such as negative self-belief issues and painful emotional and physical sensations. The memory of the mental injury is reprocessed and desensitized.
What to expect?
I will guide you to briefly focus on a trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation; typically, this is eye movement, but it can also be tapping or audio noises. The mind goes quiet when focusing on the object or light that goes from left to right. I will then ask if other emotions arise and focus on those. The bilateral stimulation continues until the negative feelings are no longer present or are diminished. There will also be a focus on sensations in the body: if discomfort occurs, there is another round of bilateral stimulation until the body is relaxed. I will also suggest and work with you on coping and relaxation options so that the mind and body begin to become desensitized to the memory, or it becomes less painful.
Who is it helpful for?
People who have experienced different types of "Big traumas" from major traumatic events but also "Little t traumas" such as bullying, a breakup, and losing a job.
